In 1880 the State of Georgia gave to each county “Scales, Weights, Yardsticks, and Measures” like this set. At that time many merchants did not have standard weights and measures. These were issued so they could correct theirs if necessary. By the time the old Court House in Cedartown was torn down these items were no longer used and were stored in the Court House and almost forgotten. Mrs. J. W. Pickett found them and requested the County Commissioners to allow her to have them polished. They were delighted for her to do this and requested that she have an appropriate case made in which to display them. Mrs. Pickett designed this case and Peek-Hightower made it. Now the Polk County Commissioners have allowed it to be moved to the museum where it is on display.
